A lot of this book was used to design/plan my AP 2D Art and Design Portfolio (Spring 22-23), and the cover is a printed version of one of the works "Open-Eyed Alive" that I tried gold leaf on, which was also included in my selected works. The print is very interesting because it's from an older version of the piece, with different shading, and the ink captures color differently than the screen, giving it a different feel than the final piece.
This book was originally Enid Blyton's The Night The Toys Came To Life, which features so many cute and colorful characters I wanted to preserve, so you might see them on the edges of the pages. I decided to keep these inner-cover pages intact because they were so cute.
This was a practice activity where we randomly generated a word and then tried to flesh out concepts for the word within maybe a minute. I think this spread is a suitable introduction to the rest of the book, because there are a lot of concept/planning pages in it.
Planning page for "Fly Away," this was before I decided on the goo-motif. In fact the middle was supposed to be a mixture of smoke/confetti, so the design looked very different.
Planning page for "Jaw Melter," this is one of my favorite planning pages because of how the colors interact. I also developed a technique of watering down acrylic paint until it worked kind of like water color here, which I liked enough to use on every other page.
Planning page for an unused piece, I had decided early on to do a 50/50 split of portraits and collages and there was only one portrait spot left, which I ended up giving to "BadaBang Boom."
Planning page for "Open-Eyed Alive," I don't know how obvious it was but this is one of my favorite pieces. I especially like how the not-watercolor ground looks on this one.
Planning page for "Captured on Screen," I enjoy the different colors used when mapping out the slime, and the colorful ribbons on the sides make me happy.
Planning page for "BadaBang Boom," I had a hard time getting the angle right at first but I think the end result was pretty good. The dots on the sides remind me of popcorn, which I find fitting.
From-life practice page, there are some shots of my face and perspective practice with a mannequinn.
This was actually the concept of "Demolished Dismantled and Scattered," the original idea was to have a head with a massive collage of the other works bursting out, but I got lazy at the end and decided to get rid of the head and just make a massive collage.
A collage meant to be viewed vertically (Page 16 on top and Page 15 beneath), I focused mainly on imagery of architecture and performers, plus a brownish-redish-orange and dark blue color scheme.
Practice with oil pastels mixed with acrylic, Page 17 is a recreation of a photo I took while Page 18 is just me going wild. These are also meant to be view vertically (Page 17 on top and Page 18 beneath).
A collage themed around pollution, with the (mostly) blue collage ground acting as the ocean, the trash acting like trash, and the yarn acting like fish. I especially like the guy who's screaming on page 19, it's a really hilarious portrayal of agony when juxtaposed with a little yarn fish going (°)#))<<.
This page is a homage to Barnett Newman's Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III, which has somehow haunted my memory for all these years.
A collage I decided to do on a whim. When I showed my mom this book, she said this was her favorite page.
My favorite page, the miniature pool for serotonin purposes! This is a small diorama of a pool with shiny-water accomplished with clear glue and a 3D mini latter. Additionally I made a small diving board to go with it, and added pole-holders to the edges so I could add removable banners flags like the ones you see at the pool.
I didn't really do anything to this page, it's just the underside of the pool, but I thought the window-effect it made was pretty cool.
This page was dedicated to practicing a 2D water texture I saw before, I think the ripples became too-uniform near the center but overall I like it.
Coming full circle this is also an unused design for my portfolio, I found the thumbnail for it on my desk the day before I started work on the back cover and agonized how I missed out on the chance of putting this in my portfolio. The original design was of a head splitting in two, with the middle being a melty-abyss of goo. I wanted more practice with color blocking and creating smooth lines, so I decided to reference Naledi no Modupi's work for its very clean style. I also decided to add some sunflower themes in the color of the goo, the coloring of the eyes, and the giant sunflower behind it. There wasn't really a reason for this, they're just my favorite flower and were on the brain while I was sketching it out.
