Statement
"In my investigation I wanted to explore the creative process of making art through a series of saturated tricolor portraits and abstract collages. My mind is always turbulent, especially in focusing my imagination. Thoughts usually manifest in bursts of color, shape, close ups and disjointed imagery. This is visualized in works 1,3,4,6,9&11, collages depicting how my mind processes creativity. Ideas jumble together, becoming intimidating, viscous forces seeking to burden and weather away the mind. Represented by the slime motif in works 7,8,10&12 (portraits), where it manifests as melt&decay.
Other ideas constantly battle for attention, trying to pull the gaze towards them instead. A struggle subtly shown by the black lines that frame the edges of each portrait, but also take a feeler-esque form when manipulating the faces of works 2&5. During the investigation I delved deep into digital media for the first time, translating my experience with acrylic into drawing programs, often working physically before transferring to digital. At first my works were overly painterly and out of focus (#5), but by my last work I could refine edges and focus attention on my focal points (#12)."
